My favorite tools of 2020!
Well it’s that time again, reporters! Since the next TFR is scheduled to go out on Christmas week, and I’m not going to kid myself, we’ll go ahead and do a 2020 roundup of…
It’s obviously been a tough year, and I chose a few tools that I hope will help make ours and others’ lives a little bit less stressful.
SPJ Race and Gender Hotline. This resource just launched a few months ago, and I think it’s especially useful and on-point. Despite its name, you don’t need a phone to use it, so it’s open to non-American journalists, too. Get immediate, concise, expert advice on sensitive topics.
Distill. My most popular post on Substack this year was Distill, a website that monitors minute changes in websites and PDFs. I pay $15 a month for the premium version, which is honestly a bit steep, but I do max out the allotted 25 trackers, so what can I say.
COVID-19 SoJo Exchange. I’m highlighting this story exchange one both because it’s still running and because I think it’s a good idea that could be replicated. The Exchange lets you share your stories, or reprint others’, so we can help each other cover universal topics like Coronavirus.
This year also saw the launch TFR’s nostalgic 200th issue and our new, comprehensive tool archive. Thanks to JC for keeping this ship paddling and Lukas for keeping it from going down. See you in 2021!
