Geolocation Estimator is a surprisingly powerful verification tool

I have an especially exciting one today, y’all. When I gave it a test run, I literally said “wow” out loud, and trust me, that doesn’t happen often.

Geolocation Estimation is a university-developed tool for estimating the location of an image. I opened my photos folder and plopped in a random one - a snapshot from one of New Orleans’ famous cemeteries.

I was borderline shocked at the accuracy, and tried a few other snapshots, all with the same level of success. I confess I don’t really understand Geolocation Estimation’s method, but it involves “deep learning.” (And yes, the name of the tool is just Geolocation Estimation, I guess they are not super big into marketing.)

Of course, the keyword here is “estimate.” I never want to imply that this or any tool would know a photo’s origin for sure, unless it perhaps has metadata that would help.

I would definitely add Geolocation Estimation to your toolbox, and use it in conjunction with other fact-checking/verification methods like reverse image search. Check those photos, reporters!
