Check out satellite imagery straight from NASA
GIJN recommends this for environmental stories
Hello reporters! This tool come to you recommended by GIJN, the Global Investigative Journalism Network. I have always thought they are especially good at picking out new tools for investigation techniques.
It’s called NASA Worldview, and as you may have guessed, it’s a product produced by the US’s space agency.
NASA Worldview is kind of a like an even more robust alternative to Google Earth, which was pretty robust already. The tool is a huge conglomeration of satellite images, mostly geared toward climate and weather researchers.
But, just like with any other tool, journalists can use it for our own purposes. I took a look at Louisiana’s coastline, which has famously been in the news for climate change for years now.
If the layers and navigation on NASA Worldview seem a little hard to understand, GIJN included a short how-to in their recommendation. If you are doing stories on the environment, this is a great one to add to your toolbox.
